I haven’t drunk the Kool-Aid. I haven’t drunk the Kool-Aid. I haven’t drunk the Kool-Aid!
More and more when I watch the news, I want to shout this at the TV. Whether it’s Kim Davis or Mike Huckabee or Ted Cruz or Bobby Jindal, every day I’m faced with an onslaught of far-right “Christians” (aka, Christians in Name Only, aka CINOs) who not only take the parts of the Bible they like as the absolute and incontrovertible Word of God, they present it as the base truth from which we all work. Their belief makes it fact and the thing we should all pay the most attention to. Continue reading
Let’s talk about Religious Freedom for a few minutes.
Yesterday I read yet another article that implied that anyone who is not a part of an established religion is not protected by the religious freedom section of the First Amendment. This one was about Kim Davis, the delusional Kentucky clerk who refuses to issue same-sex marriage licenses believing both that her understanding of the Bible allows her to refuse to perform her job and that it enables her to pick and choose which laws she will obey. She’s been going through the courts insisting that her “sincerely held” beliefs trump everyone else’s. Continue reading
Michael Savage – well-named
Remember my post about mean-spirited, childish right-wingers? I’d like to add this guy to the list.
His name is Michael Savage. He’s a radio personality in the mold of Mark Levin and Rush Limbaugh. He’s a nasty, angry, middle-aged white man. I couldn’t tell you why he’s angry. He’s successful, famous in his genre and lives a pretty good life. But it bothers him that there are other people out there who want good lives, too. He can’t imagine why they would try to get that good life by whatever means possible. He doesn’t believe that there is an experience beyond his own that has any value. Continue reading
I got called “faggot” last week. In Berkeley! In 2015!
Every once in a while something happens that is so out of the norm that I almost don’t have words. I was actually speechless when I passed a guy right after I’d moved to San Francisco in 2010 who muttered “fag” under his breath as he went by. Continue reading
A couple of times a day something about a Fox “News” report comes through my Facebook or Twitter feed that looks interesting (i.e., horrific) enough to watch for three minutes or so. What I find are not just opinions I disagree with, I find the most mean-spirited people I have seen anywhere. Seriously. Anywhere on the planet.
I used to think Bill O’Reilly with his hollering and condescension and insensitivity was unusually bad, but he’s not. While the different personalities may have different styles, their message is always the same: degrade the enemy at all costs. It’s really very Orwellian. Continue reading
This morning my Twitter feed presented me with this:
Two women (1st Lt. Shaye Haver, 25, and Capt. Kristen Griest, 26) have overcome the grueling training required to become Army Rangers. I’ve got to take my hat off to them because God knows I could never have done it. I was wiped out watching the footage of the things they had to do to graduate from the program. I almost spilled my latte.
Seriously, it’s amazing that anyone can complete training like this or what the Navy Seals have to go through and then go on to do the work that training is supposed to prepare them for. This isn’t like the fat guy down the street telling you he did an Iron Man twenty years ago. This is just the beginning of a career-long Iron Man. Continue reading
